Reviews of 14.01.01 - Live.

Montana Pete arrive in Ireland to play three concerts (Belfast, Limerick, Dublin) coinciding with Alpha Relish releasing a 7 inch of theirs. From London, this three piece plays a spiky energetic hardcore pop. It's a quirky sound, difficult to pin down because it attempts to cover so many bases. Elements of ye olde post-punk, classic indie jangle and even the odd bit of reggae occur, and vocals are split between the bassist and guitarist as they see fit. Unfortunately this eclecticism doesn't seem to hold the attention of the small crowd, which gets noticeably smaller at last bus time. I liked them - in a cold near empty Whelan's their enthusiastic performance gave them a definite underdog appeal, but they might be better to focus their ambitions to give a clearer shot of their music. The drummer should lead the way in this- he is consistently excellent, rattling out angular anti-funk on his stripped down kit.
